Be careful how you stack your plates

Being Valentines’ Day over the weekend, I set out to make kel’s life easier by doing some housework when she least expected it. One part of this was, late last night, putting some of the newly washed up platters away in the cupboard.

Before I was married, I didn’t own a single platter (a large plate used for arranging food, salads, and other obscure items to be shared around at a dinner party). Now, we own more than a dozen different shaped and sized crockery items, but they all live in the one cupboard where the original wedding present platters were a tight fit.

I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to stack a range of different sized and shaped crockery in a confined space: I’m not terribly good at it, but i’ve never had a problem in the past, and so I thought that this would be no exception.

It was a normal night’s sleep until at 4:30 this morning, I heard a crash somewhere in the unit. “Great,” I thought to myself, someone’s broken into the house. Better have a look around, and try and scare them off.”

So I looked for some kind of implement to carry out of the bedroom to make myself look more scary. Nothing. I probably could have taken a pillow, but I thought that was even worse than not having anything, so I ventured out into the dark, turned a light on to see who (if anyone) was there.

No-one. All the appliances were still there, even the lightweight, easy to steal ones.

What had made the crash? The platters. Not broken, just jumped out of the (closed) cupboard they were resting in.

The moral? If you want a good night’s sleep, be careful how you stack your plates.
