Movie: Good

A rare night at the movies, and nothing was really calling out for attention. Spotted this film, noted that it was a Viggo Mortensen lead role, and thought it might be interesting, despite mixed reviews on metacritic (40%).

Though as a film, it’s nothing amazing, as a story, and as a moral journey to reflect on, it was worth the time investment. The story of a fictional German literature professor – John Halder (Mortensen) – who served in the army in World War I, and how he was presented with various moral choices through the rise of national socialism.

It’s not incredibly well acted (though some of the minor performances are well done, notably Halder’s mother), and the direction is a little all over the place, but it manages to sustain interest, and provoke thought.
