sermon – money and possessions

Last night I preached a sermon on what the Bible says about money and possessions.

We’re still in between church computers at the moment, so I recorded it via the iPhone, then boosted the volume a little using Audacity and uploaded it as an MP3. My notes were around 3800 words (though for a while it was hovering around 5000 words), and with a bit of improvisation as I was going, it ended up at 25:56.

Feel free to have a listen and tell me what you think – even a comment that says you downloaded it would be helpful, so I know if anyone reading here is interested in such things.

Sermon – The Idolatry of Money and Possessions.

If you’re interested in reading more on the subject, I found the the book Neither Poverty Nor Riches: A Biblical Theology of Possessions (aff link) was really helpful.

  1. Thanks for sharing this Dave! Great sermon! It really was…and I’ve sat through a few and as a believer of another faith I found your message universal and reassuring! Have a blessed day!

  2. Thanks for listening Radhika: I know sermons don’t always have the best reputation, but I’m glad to have presented things from the bible in a way that resonated.

  3. Listened to this today and really quite enjoyed it. I liked the way you linked money and time. Someone’s ‘wealth’ could be measured by how much time they spent on what mattered to them. Also found interesting the historical side. I hadn’t really considered the Bible chronologically before. Please post your next sermon! You should start a podcast…

  4. Toby,

That’s a great insight around measuring wealth. I’ll have a look around and try and post another sermon that I have lying around somewhere: need to brave the rain and head into college shortly though!
