hoochie mamma cafe, newtown

Caffe Di Gabrielle. 153 Missenden Rd, Newtown NSW 2042.

Missenden Rd is a tough neighbourhood to run a cafe – you have Campos, Luxe Cafe, and Cordial all within walking distance.

So I’d never tried this place – how good could it possibly be with this much competition! Imagine my surprise: it’s a really solid place with plenty of space to eat, or study, or talk, and the coffee is really good too.

I order my takeaway decaf latte from the counter here: there’s a bit of a wait, but it’s clear that some effort is being put into each cup, so I feel happy to wait and have a look around.

If you’re in a hurry to grab something to eat, you can see a good breadth of sandwich options, and the usual range of cookies and other pastries above the window.

If you have a bit more time than I did, you can sit down for some table service and spend some time here, or outside in the large outdoor eating area.

They’re clearly making the most of their space: not just a cafe, but there’s also an ATM and a grocery store! Note that there are a couple of high chairs available, and there are bathrooms on site too.

The coffee is really good: it’s a good temperature to start drinking, and it has a great flavour and texture. A realistic alternative (at least for decaf) to its neighbours.

  1. I’m not in a great situation to make that comparison. For decaf (which is all I’m drinking at the moment), I think I’d choose HM: if nothing else, the queues are shorter, and the quality is there.
