how to give a lecture

The ever insightful Tim Noonan tweeted a link to this piece by MIT lecturer Patrick Winston. A lecture on how to give a lecture – if you have to do any spoken communication in a structured way, this lecture, broken up into short video segments, is worth watching.

  1. Mmm, interesting lecture, but I disagree with him on several points. I don’t think the chalkboard is all it’s cracked up to be. I think overheads can be useful. And I think the 80’s fashion is scary. Wonder what he thinks of powerpoint (if he’s still alive!)

  2. Watching the postlude is useful too. The reminder that you need to teach almost to the level of the students knowledge already. It’s interesting because that works very well for me in my teaching and training students – working always with their existing knowledge and skills.
