Feuerzangenbowle

lighting the rum

A few of us gathered at erika and dave’s house for a Feuerzangenbowle – a German winter tradition involving rum, mulled wine, and a “sugar cone”; kind of like a sugar cube, but a lot larger. The sugar cone is doused with rum, and then lit; it burns while you pour the rest of the rum over the top.

Once all the sugar has dissolved, the heated wine (which had orange peel, cloves and cinnamon added to it) is served in cups, and you drink it like tea: it’s a very warming drink, and it was a lot of fun to spend time with those who attended. Some good memories for all present. I’ve uploaded a few photos so that anyone who wasn’t there has a chance to find out what it was like.

  1. Hi Dave
Do you know where you bought the sugar cone and the metal holder for your feuerzangenbowle? I’m in Melbourne and we need some for a party!
    Cheers
