DVD: Ghost Town

The tagline of this film is he sees dead people… and they annoy him. It stars Ricky Gervais, who I’d always found the most painful part of watching the UK’s The Office, even if behind the scenes he was the architect of the whole show. As such, I had quite low expectations, but having heard enough positive coverage, I thought I’d try it out.

Overall, it’s a by-the-numbers romantic comedy, complete with scenes of one… no wait… both main characters falling over in a slapstick fashion, the obligatory boy meets/loses/gets back the girl, and an ending with just enough divergence from being blatantly predictable that it holds interest.

The surprise is that there are a number of laugh-out-loud funny moments in the mix: enough to make it actually work as a comedy. If you’re a fan of Gervais’ work, you will really enjoy this.
