Book: Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope that Matters
I somehow managed to read this in 24 hours, as part of preparing a sermon on how we make money into an idol. In just a few chapters – the book is 178 small-ish pages long – Keller covers the ideas of how sex, money, and power could become the obsession of your life.
When we hear the term “idolatry” we tend to think of a person bowing down in front of a statue and chanting. Perhaps you consider that a modern westerner might have their car or their job as their idol. Instead, Keller defines idol as the one thing that drives you more than any other.
Are you saving money to the point of obsession? Perhaps your idol is money, but you’re trying to achieve financial independence – to have complete security in life via money.
It’s a short read, and it will help you unearth the hidden idols that might be in your life.
