It’s taken me a while to understand what is involved in good phone etiquette, but even more difficult is knowing what to say in person, in situations requiring more than a casual level of formality.
For that reason, whenever someone says something that appears particularly stand-out in its politeness, it stays with me.
One such expression was a couple of months back. I was involved in a lengthy discussion about coffee with a man who owns a coffee shop in Parramatta. He spent some time talking about the qualities of the particular type of coffee that he was recommending, and when I agreed to try it (despite being half-way through a coffee from another cafe at the time), he said “I hope my taste is as good as yours”.
And yes, kel drank the coffee I was half-way through.
