Movie: Downfall
A film about Hitler that humanises him? Made by Germans? This was worth looking at for the sake of curiosity if nothing less. It’s not a short film, at around two and a half hours, and it’s certainly not an upbeat film: concentrating on Hitler’s last month or so, watching his descent from having lost the war to coming to terms with that loss. Some very sad scenes, and certainly not a sense of Hitler being just an ordinary person, but interesting for its coverage of a period of history. Quite slow and drawn out, and not really seeking to make any comments on the period either way, while being careful not to endorse anything. Oh, and also quite graphic in a lot of scenes: the sense of suffering that the German people went through is touched on, even if the plight of others is not.
