Jack and the Bean coffee. 187 Wilson St, Newtown NSW 2042. I’ve driven past this cafe any number of times over the years – Wilson St is a little-known shortcut to bypass much of Newtown’s slow arterial rd – King St. Finally I manage to call in: there’s the usual Saturday morning crowd out for a coffee, or to catch up on some uni work: the tables are close together, and to get a takeaway coffee, it’s necessary to zig-zag up to the counter.
The decaf is pre-ground, sadly, but still has a pleasant flavour: it looks like a place worth multiple visits to sample the menu. I’ll be back!
Update (thanks /karen/): Hours: Mon: 7am-3pm, Tues-Fri 6:30am-4pm; Sat & Sun: 8:30am-4pm. Kitchen closes at 3pm every day.
I just went here last week with a friend and her little kids, who are staying in a house off the beautiful park facing the cafe. We sat outside in the sun on little stools. Had some pear and raspberry bread, which was delicious, and my long black hit the spot. Staff are pleasant and very child friendly as well. As a tip, probably a good place for mums with bubs to have a catch up and then hit the playground opposite?
forget the busy, noisy King st, this place has so much more atmosphere and the gorgeous Victorian park is across the road. Coffee is excellent and food is fab!
Hey Dave!!
Great website mate!! …..I love Cafe Ism. Less fuss to meet and greet people. Ample parking, awesome park across the street for families, one block down from busy King St…it’s all good!
..oh and its a 3min walk from Macdonaldtown train station.
Convenience PLUS!
@iconic88 Thanks for the compliment on my website. Agreed: it’s a good spot to go with kids, whether you sit them down in the cafe, or (in good weather) let them run around in the park across the street!
@louisa Thanks for the comment!
@bec Can you believe how generous the banana bread serves are for the price?!
